NOVICE / SPORTSMAN PATTERN MEET
Results from the Novice/Sportsman pattern meet on September 12, 1998.
Seven contestants joined us for the one-day event. Two Sportsman and five Novice entered, with three of the novice entrants trying pattern for the first time. The emphasis for this meet was for the first time Novice Pilots to get their feet wet in pattern flying. Troy Newman volunteered to run a pattern training session in the morning, and he did a great job explaining the pattern, and giving tips to all the pilots.
Neil Miles, in his first pattern competition, dominated the Novice class, winning all four rounds. Michael Schauer had a shaky start, but moved up every round to finish in second place. Moe Mekelburg got off to a good start, but a crash during the landing in the third round ended his flying for the day. He finished in third place. Bob Ferrero and Jack Bugg, both in their first competition, flew well and finished fourth and fifth.
Doug Idler and Kevin Kelsey battled it out in the Sportsman class. Less than two points separated Doug and Kevin after three rounds. Doug ended up taking the fourth round for the win. This was only Kevin's third pattern meet, and he is going to be tough competition in the future.
All the pilots had a great time and are looking forward to flying in competition again next year. The Love-Air club is trying to get a spring date lined up for next year to hold another training session and Novice/Sportsman meet. Hope to see you there.
