Scale Aerobatics

Contest

May 26 & 27, 2001

At the Love-Air R/C Club Field

Ault, CO

This year marked the third scale aerobatics contest held at Love-Air. Contest Director Bert Sutton provided a well-organized and fun contest for pilots from throughout Colorado and Kansas.

The weather this Memorial Day weekend offered challenging “in your face” crosswinds from the east for the majority of the contest. However, all pilots flew and none had any incident.

Three classes of competition were hosted: Basic, Sportsman, and Advanced. All three classes flew three rounds on Saturday, despite a late start due to sun position and a one-hour rain delay in the afternoon. Flying wrapped up before 6pm so everyone could catch the hockey game!

Flying resumed again on Sunday at 10 am. Winds were again out of the east, offering a challenging day of flying for the unknown rounds for Sportsman and Advanced pilots. Again, the weather came up and brought on lightning and hail, causing another delay in competition. Basic was in the middle of another round when the weather forced the delay. Soon the rain broke and Allen Robnett and Dave Loshbaugh were able to complete their rounds.

Overall, the contest went very smooth. No one lost or even broke any aircraft during the contest, however one individual from Pueblo suffered a crash the Friday evening before. It’s a shame to drive so far to break your airplane, so we appreciate you coming to support our contest.

Freestyle contest was held after a rain delay on Sunday. Two of the contestants actually had to perform in the rain! Talk about stress. Rocco Mariani took First place in the Free, Bert Sutton Second, and Michael Schauer Third.  Dan Williams was the fourth up in the Free, and also gave a nice performance considering the weather.

That’s it for this year! Hope you come back next year!
